Atrius Health Testifies in Support of Nurse Practitioners

Dr. Richard Lopez, Chief Medical Officer of VNA Care and Senior Vice President of Population Health for Atrius Health, along with Jennifer Derkarzarian, DNP, RN, ANP-BC, Chief Nursing Officer of Atrius Health, recently testified before the Joint Committee on Public Health in support of legislation that would remove existing restrictions on the licenses of nurse practitioners (NPs) in the state. Atrius Health was among several organizations who testified in support of the bill HB2451/S1257“An Act to Contain Health Care Costs and Improve Access to Value-Based Nurse Practitioner Care As Recommended by the IOM and FTC.”

Atrius Health Testifies on Telemedicine Legislation

As a member of the Massachusetts Telemedicine Coalition, Atrius Health recently submitted testimony in support of SB 549 and HB578, “An Act Advancing and Expanding Access to Telemedicine Services,” which is being heard before the Joint Committee on Financial Services.

Although there are several other telemedicine bills before the Legislature that have the same goals of advancing and expanding access to telemedicine services in Massachusetts, we believe SB549 and HB578 are the most comprehensive bills that will help eliminate antiquated requirements for providing care in the 21st century.

Boston Surgery Center and Atrius Health Complete First Total Joint Replacement in a Massachusetts Free-Standing Surgery Center

On Wednesday, June 14, Atrius Health doctors performed the first-ever total joint replacement surgery to occur in a Massachusetts free-standing ambulatory surgery center.

The procedure, a knee replacement, was conducted by Dr. James Phillips and assisted by Dr. Louis Bley at Boston Out-Patient Surgical Suites in Waltham, which enabled the patient to return to her home later in the day and recover with ongoing support from a dedicated team of home healthcare nurses and physical therapists.

Atrius Health Joins Massachusetts Coalition for Coverage and Care

Atrius Health recently joined a growing list of health care providers, consumer groups, representatives from the business community, and others to form the Massachusetts Coalition for Coverage & Care in response to potential threats to the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA).

The Coalition was created by Health Care For All and is being co-hosted by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation which will provide research and technical assistance. The group was formed to ensure that state health reform measures (Chapter 58 of the Acts of 2006) that provide universal coverage to Massachusetts residents is protected.

To Improve Mental Health Care, Study Matches Patients with Providers

A research team comprised of researchers and clinicians at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, University at Albany, SUNY, Outcome Referrals, Inc., and Atrius Health has recently been awarded $1.7 million in funding from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). The funding is for a study on improving mental health care by scientifically matching patient needs to clinical providers’ strengths.
