SMArt Kids: Learning Healthy Habits

| Posted On Feb 07, 2011 | By:

Hello! We are excited to introduce to you a unique program for children and their parents called SMArt Kids, based on Harvard Vanguard’s innovative Shared Medical Appointment (SMA) model of care. A SMA is a medical appointment that also has a group component, providing 8-10 patients the opportunity to learn from the doctor as well as gain support, encouragement, and ideas from other members of the group who have similar experiences and challenges.

SMArt Kids is a monthly group medical appointment that will not only evaluate your child’s medical needs but will also be focused on teaching kids and their families how to make healthier choices regarding food, drink, and activity. Each session is co-facilitated by one of us and a nutritionist who can provide excellent suggestions on ways to incorporate these healthy choices into your daily schedule.

Because we are both full-time working moms, we deeply understand the impact that busy lives and the easy access to “poor” healthy lifestyle choices can have on the health of our children. Turning good choices into habits is also difficult, often because we try to correct everything at once or aren’t really certain how to change our child’s behavior in a way that “sticks.”

During each SMArt Kids group, we will focus on one specific theme related to our five goals for healthy eating and lifestyle choices, specifically:

After each monthly SMArt Kids session, we plan to post a summary of that session on this blog. Our participating families will have a place to go to reference all of the information and strategies we discussed so they can employ them between our visits. But better yet – everyone who reads these blog posts will have the information on how to make healthy choices, and can try some of the group’s best strategies in their own homes with their own kids.

We are really excited about this new SMArt Kids program which is currently being offered at our West Roxbury and Burlington offices. If you’re interested in learning more, please call our Burlington office at (781) 221-2500 or our West Roxbury office at (617) 325-2800 for more information.

We invite you to check back for our posts and join us on our journey to help make it easier for kids (and their parents!) to make smart choices about eating and staying active!

Authors: Dr. Brittanny Boulanger and Dr. Shira Brown

Dr. Brittanny Boulanger has been with Harvard Vanguard since 2005 and practices pediatrics at our Burlington office. As a vegetarian, she is always in search of interesting recipes for her family. An avid runner, she takes the recommendation of 60 minutes of daily active play for kids seriously and tries to model this with her two young children, whether it is by coaching her son’s soccer team, playing on the playground or skiing with her kids.

Dr. Shira Brown joined Harvard Vanguard in 2008 and practices pediatrics at our West Roxbury office. She has three small children and loves cooking with them, creating fun and healthy kid-friendly foods like “banana sushi” and “smiley-face omelets.” She also enjoys doing yoga with her children.
